Position in the LodgeDescription
Worshipful Master

This position is like the president of an organization. His job is to make sure that all the business of the lodge is taken care of properly. He works closely with the Lodge Secretary to make sure that all correspondence is answered in the best interest of the brothers of the lodge and the Fraternity as a whole.

Senior Warden

The Senior Warden equates to a vice president in many other organizations. His job is work with the Worshipful Master and be his backup if he is unable to perform any action for the lodge.

Junior Warden

The Junior Warden is third in the line of succession in the lodge. His job is to make sure that the brothers of a lodge are well taken care during meals or after meeting coffee. This is also the first position in a lodge that a brother is elected to on his way to the Worshipful Master chair.

Treasurer

The Treasurer is to keep the accounts, collect annual dues from the members, pay bills, and forward annual dues to the Grand Lodge. The annual presentation of accounts is an important measure of the lodge's continuing viability, whilst the efficient collection of annual subscriptions is vitally important, as any lapse in payment (deliberate or unintentional) can lead to a member losing voting rights, being denied the opportunity to visit other lodges, and finally even being debarred or excluded from his own lodge.

Secretary

The Secretary's role includes issuing the 'summons' (a formal notice of an impending meeting, with time, date and agenda), recording meeting minutes, completing statistical returns to the Grand Lodge, and advising the Worshipful Master on matters of procedure.

Senior Deacon

The Senior Deacon sits to the right of the Worshipful Master. He is the Master's messenger and does lots of walking. He welcomes and escorts both visitors and new candidates into the lodge and usually introduces distinguished visitors. During degree rituals, he is the guide for the new candidate, conducting him around the lodge room. In the opening and closing ceremonies of the lodge, the Senior Deacon opens and closes the Bible, and lights or extinguishes the candles at the altar. In many lodges, he also carries the ballot box around the room when new members are voted on.

Junior Deacon

The Junior Deacon sits to the right of the Senior Warden, guarding the door to the lodge. He is the messenger of the Senior Warden, as well as the lodge "doorman." It is his job to be certain the Tyler is guarding the door on the outside, and he allows visitors to enter, after they've been properly vouched for. He and the Tyler communicate with each other by knocking back and forth on either side of the closed door.

Senior Steward &
Junior Steward

The Senior and Junior Stewards do much of the grunt work. They're the Junior Warden's assistants, and they help to set up the lodge room. They prepare all new candidates before entering the lodge for their degree rituals, and escort them to the lodge room, where the Senior Deacon takes over.

Tyler

The Tyler is sometimes known as the 'Outer Guard' of the lodge. His duty is to guard the door (from the outside), with a drawn sword, and ensure that only those who are duly qualified manage to gain entry to the temple. In some jurisdictions, he also prepares candidates for their admission.
